In September 1950 my father J.J.Leahy bought Oban Station 60 miles south-west of Mt Isa, from T.A.Fields Queensland Estates. It had an area of 1016 square miles and was bought with 8,000 cattle and 23,000 sheep. The Meriden School was taken over by the Federal Government, I think, for an Air Force Headquarters during the Second World War. The Government requestioned Welbeck, our home, and made it available to Meriden who used it for their borders. The rails and steps in this photo were erected by the school.
